Growth of coliphage T7 in Salmonella typhimurium.

A mutant of Salmonella typhimurium was found to be sensitive to killing by coliphage T7 because of an alteration in its surface properties. However, the infections were abortive and studies with (32)P-labeled T7 grown in Escherichia coli B (T7.B) indicated that the phage DNA was restricted by S. typhimurium. When a mutant T7 which survived the restriction and produced plaques on Salmonella (T7....

Transfection of Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium spheroplasts: host-controlled restriction of infective bacteriophage P22 deoxyribonucleic acid.

Under proper conditions, one infective center was obtained for 3 x 10(8) molecules of P22 phage deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) when lysozyme-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid spheroplasts of Escherichia coli were transfected in the presence of 25 mug of protamine sulfate per ml. A 3- to 50-fold B-specific and K-specific E. coli restriction of the incoming P22 DNA was observed. When P22 DNA-infected ...

F-Factor-mediated restriction of bacteriophage T7: synthesis of RNA and protein in T7-infected Escherichia coli F- and F+ cells.

Bacteriophage T7 is unable to productively infect Escherichia coli strains carrying the sex factor F. T7 phage development, in terms of RNA and protein synthesis, was compared in T7-infected isogenic F- and F+ strains of E. coli. Slightly less T7 early mRNA and early protein were synthesized in F+ cells. In addition to the defect in T7 late protein production in F+ cells reported by others, sig...

CONSTRUCTION OF RECOMBINANT PLASMIDS FOR PERIPLASMIC EXPRESSION OF HUMAN GROWTH HORMONE IN ESCHERICHIA COLI UNDER T7 AND LAC PROMOTERS

In order to study the periplasmic expression of human growth hormone (hGH) in Escherichia coli, the related cDNA was inserted in two expression plasmids carrying pelB signal peptide, one with lac bacterial promoter and the other with a bacteriophage T7-based promoter. The recombinant plasmids were moved to TG1 and BL21 strains of E. coli, respectively. To induce the expression systems, IPTG and...

In Vitro Biocontrol of Escherichia coli Through the Immobilization of its Specific Lytic Bacteriophage on Cellulose Acetate Biodegradable Film

Background and Aims: Bacteriophages are mandatory bacterial parasites that are harmless to human and animal, which are used by dipping or spraying in food as natural antimicrobial agents. The use of these methods leads to wasting or trapping of phage in food, but its immobilization on the polymer surface facilitates the contact of phage with the host cell at the food surface. Therefore, the aim...
